Approximately five years after Israel-based Mirabilis invented the instant messaging software market with ICQ, Microsoft released MSN Messenger. By that time other companies (notably AOL and Yahoo!) had their own messaging programs and the market was split three ways. But Microsoft tied MSN Messenger to its popular Hotmail e-mail service and shoved the software down the throats of new Windows customers, quickly conquering a large chunk of instant messaging marketshare. Now MSN Messenger is (according to Microsoft) used by millions of people, thus making it another way for Microsoft to invade the privacy of its customers. To set up an MSN Messenger account Microsoft requires users to sign up for Passport, the latest in Orwellian Internet tracking software. Passport has been proven insecure and MSN Messenger itself has turned out to be as buggy and full of privacy holes as the rest of Microsoft's products. Additionally, MSN Messenger is a closed product that only works with other MSN clients while there is now a handful of other IM programs (notably Trillian) which work with some or all of the major messaging systems - including MSN Messenger.
