Replacements for Windows XP Pro Businesses and business professionals generally have more money to spend on software than home users do. So, naturally, software companies want to convince those customers to purchase products that cost more than an average home user is willing to spend. Microsoft's entry in that horse race is Windows XP Professional Edition, a moderately improved version of XP Home. XP Pro brings over all the good and bad elements of its cheaper sibling, then adds upgrades like... Improved security? Actually, all XP Pro does is restore several features that were disabled in Home, like network access permissions, file system encryption, and support for as many as two processors on an SMP system. The only significant upgrade in XP Pro is the price - Pro costs twice as much as Home. That's an awful lot of money just to support an extra CPU and add security that should have existed in the home edition to begin with. Nearly all of the alternatives below beat XP Pro on at least two of those points, with superior security, support for a handful of processors, and prices that start at zero.
