Word is Microsoft's entry in the word processing and document preparation software market. Word is generally bundled in with Office, but is also readily available as a standalone product. Because of its inclusion with Office (which is in turn bundled into most new PCs being sold), Word dominates the word processing software market. Word is expensive (over $200 for the standalone retail version as this is written), tends to be a memory hog, and the built-in macro features are inherently insecure - providing an excellent breeding ground for software viruses. Documents generated by Word also have the bad habit of hiding extra information (such as deleted text and personally identifiable details about the file author) in their headers. And files created in Word usually aren't readable in other word processing software because Microsoft keeps Word's document format proprietary.
